Caught Up in The Hunger Games Craze!

Since it's almost the second weekend of the movie, The Hunger Games, I think it's now safe to post something about it. I've been too caught up with the movie that I have to re-read all three books just to refresh my memory. And of course, I'm excited to share some bits of information about the movie. Anyway, I will just be talking about some of the main characters, so I guess this is not much of a spoiler to those (losers!) who haven't seen it yet.

The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games

To those who are not familiar with the book, The Hunger Games is set in a dystopian era (supposedly the future North America). The country is now called Panem and the Capitol rules over the 12 outlying Districts. Each year, a girl and a boy (between 12 to 18) is selected in a lottery from each district - they are known as tributes. They are forced to fight each other to the death until only one remains.

Now for the main characters of the story...

Katniss Everdeen
Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen is the main protagonist in the story. She is supposedly named after a root crop which is commonly known as "arrowhead". This might be an allusion to her being good at shooting with a bow and arrow. She is from District 12 along with Peeta Mellark (co-tribute) and Haymitch Abernathy (mentor and victor of the 50th Hunger Games). Jennifer Lawrence plays Katniss in the movie. You probably saw her on X-Men: First Class and Winter's Bone.

Peeta Mellark
Peeta Mellark
Peeta Mellark is the male tribute of District 12. He is the son of a baker and has once helped Katniss when her family was starving. He is characterized as a likable person and selfless. During the interview before the game, he professed her love for Katniss (apparently he's been in love with her since they were five years olds). Josh Hutcherson plays Peeta in the movie. He recently starred in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Gale Hawthorne
Gale Hawthorne
Gale Hawthorne is the best friend and hunting partner of Katniss Everdeen. Liam Hemsworth plays Gale Hawthorne in the movie. You'll probably remember him as the guy from The Last Song, opposite Miley Cyrus.

Haymitch Abernathy
Haymicth Abernathy
Haymitch Abernathy is the only other victor from District 12 and therefore tasked to mentor the tributes from District 12. He is always drunk and sleeps with a knife on his hand; he may always look wasted but he is still dangerous and cunning. Woody Harrelson plays Haymitch in the movie. He is best known for starring in No Country for Old Men.

Effie Trinket
Effie Trinket

Effie Trinket is the assigned escort for the tributes of District 12. She is prim and proper and has high regards for people with good manners. She's also crazy about keeping up with schedules. Elizabeth Banks plays Effie in the movie. She is Betty Brant from the Spider Man franchise.

Cinna
Cinna
Cinna is a resident of the Capitol but he doesn't dress and act like most of the people in the city. He doesn't wear wigs and body paints. He is the stylist of Katniss Everdeen; he specifically requested to be assigned to District 12. He became Katniss' close friend. Lenny Kravitz plays Cinna in the movie. Well, you already know who Lenny Kravitz is, right?

Rue
Rue
Rue is the female tribute from District 11. She became Katniss' ally in the arena after she warned Katniss about the tracker jackers and later on cure her of tracker jacker stings. Katniss can see her sister, Prim, in Rue so she can't possibly kill her. Amandla Sternberg plays Rue in the movie. She is best known for playing the young Cataleya in Colombiana (which stars Zoe Zaldana).

Cato
Cato
Cato is the tribute from District 2. He is a Career tribute (one who trains for the games and then volunteers during the Reaping). He is described as brutal and ruthless when it comes to killing. He fought Katniss and Peeta at the end. Alexander Ludwig plays Cato in the movie. He is best known for starring in Race to Witch Mountain alongside The Rock.

There you go... some of the faces who gave life to the characters in The Hunger Games novel. Expect some more tidbits about The Hunger Games universe as I went on going ga-ga over both the series and the movie (which I've seen 4 times, by the way).
